Honus Wagner

From 1944 to 1947 Preacher Roe pitched for the Pittsburgh Pirates. During this time Honus Wagner was a coach for the Pirates. Honus Wagner played for Pittsburgh from 1897-1917. In 1905 he was the first player to ever have his name put on a Louisville Slugger and in 1939 was one of the first five players to be placed in the Hall of Fame. Honus Wagner is a standout of one of the many great legends that played and coached on the same baseball diamonds with Preacher Roe.

Today the 1909 Honus Wagner baseball card is the most valuable card in baseball history. It is valued at over one million dollars. There are only 2 known cards in existence. At the time of Honus Wagner's baseball career, baseball cards were distributed by tobacco companies as a marketing ploy. Wagner did not want to promote smoking so he asked that all his cards be pulled from production.

This photograph with Honus Wagner's autograph is one of only two of its kind known to exist. This is from Preacher Roe's personal collection of baseball memorabilia. You can purchase one of these two photos today. See Honus Wagner Photo for sale for more information.
