Preacher Roe was recruited by Frank Rickey (Branch Rickey's brother) to play baseball for the St. Louis Cardinal organization. On August 22, 1938, Roe pitched in his first major league baseball game for the St. Louis Cardinals. Due to the fact that he was not allowed to warm up but pulled straight from the dugout and thrown out onto the pitcher's mound, Roe made a poor showing at this game. He was sent to the Cardinal minors (a system Branch Rickey developed) for the next five years
before returning to the big leagues.
Great things were in store for this young pitcher.
This is the only photo of Roe in a Cardinal uniform known to exist.
