In 1944 Pittsburgh bought Roe from the Cardinal organization. In Preacher's opinion this is one of the best things that could have happened to him in the game of baseball.
The St. Louis Cardinals had several famous left handed pitchers. As a result, Preacher didn't have an opportunity to stand out in St. Louis. However, the Pirates gave him a chance to make a name for himself. And make a name for himself he did.
In 1945 he was invited to play in his first National League All Star game.
This was the year that he led the league with 148 strikeouts.
